Choosing psychology as my path was a major turning point in my life. Whenever I mention that I’m a psychology undergrad, the first thing people usually say is, “Wow, so can you read my mind now?“
Just a heads up—Remember that we’re not mind readers. So, please don’t ask us, “Can you guess what I’m thinking?” We can’t, buddy, we just can’t🥹.
Sometimes life throws problems our way, making us feel depressed and super stressed. In those moments, we just want to talk to someone who gets it. As a psychology student when we dealing with our own issues, please don’t just say,
“Look at your notes.”🤷♀️And also, don’t say, “You shouldn’t be like this, you’re a psychology undergrad.” Dude, before becoming a psychology undergrad, we were human beings.💔
One day, a girl told one of my friend, “Be serious. How can you help patients like this? Why act like you have no responsibility?” Dude, I personally love being happy and keeping things simple in my life. I’m into music, dancing, and karate too. I can’t be serious all the time. The same goes for my friend.
Don’t expect psychology undergrad to always be calm, quiet, and serious. Sure, some are, but we have our own lives too.
Keep work and personal life separate. And don’t forget to add the good things of the work to your life. Just keep that in mind.
When we go to internships, Please don’t ask a psychology undergrad,
“How much do you get from your internship?” (seriously, don’t make us cry). We’re pretty used to being in the “EXPERIENCE IS WHAT MATTERS” zone.
YES! I enjoying my psychology degree and ignoring everybody who says, “Your degree has no scope, you won’t find a job”🫡😁
I’m pretty sure a lot of psych students have been through this too. Don’t think psychology is easy or something you can just memorize. It’s like a fruit salad – made up of a bunch of different subjects all mixed together.
What are some common emotional challenges faced by psychology students, and how can acknowledging these help me?
I will answer this from one of my experiences.
There was a time when I was busy studying for my finals, working on a big research project, attending an internship, and practicing for a Karate tournament. I was feeling really tired and started to lose interest in my work, making it hard to focus or stay motivated. I’m a psychology undergrad. I help others. motivate others. But at this moment I felt let down. Felt like “I’m not good enough” for this field.
But after, I noticed that I was burned out and that it was affecting both my studies and my mental health.
So, I decided to take a short break, do some self-care activities like exercising and hanging out with friends, and talk to a mentor for support. This helped me recharge, get back to my studies with fresh energy, and avoid long-term burnout.
Most of my undergrad friends were also going through these kind of emotional challenges. As much as we help others, there are times when we need help.Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
